Redwell Primary School – The Most Sought-After Primary in Wellingborough

A recent article in the Northamptonshire Telegraph identified Redwell Primary School as the ‘most sought-after primary in Wellingborough.

Using figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request, they revealed that Redwell received a total of 195 applications for just 90 available places.  Of those 195, 110 parents cited us as their most preferred option.

Mrs Anne Ansell, Head Teacher, said;

“We feel very pleased that we are still such a sought after school.  It is amazing that so many families would like their children to start their educational journey with us at Redwell and be part of our Redwell family.”

My mother in law used to work at Redwell many years ago as a teacher and has been working abroad as a teacher for the British Forces before leaving education (and work completely) after having a stroke.

Both of my in-laws have worked in schools for a number of years. My in-laws visited the school on Values Day and asked me to send in this feedback.

We have been working in education in the British Forces for many years and UK schools before that and this has given us a wide experience of schools.

We had a wonderful time visiting on Values Day and we felt very welcomed by everyone. The staff and children showed excellent behaviour, values and smiles.

We were so delighted to see the colourful displays and the wealth and depth of learning that clearly happens at Redwell. Particularly, the children’s voice that shone through these displays, both in academic areas and their interest in reading, anti-bullying, values and so on.

Everyone has been very friendly and the happy atmosphere seems to be present throughout the school, both in the children, staff and displays. We wanted to pass this on, to acknowledge the wonderful event and community feel that it raised but also the general feel and atmosphere of the school and all who learn there.

On Friday 9th March, children’s author John Dougherty came to visit Redwell as an exciting treat for the end of our special story telling weeks. He entertained, enthused and inspired the children and teachers in each of the four fantastic assemblies he put on for the children. With each key stage, Mr Dougherty spoke to the children about where he gets his inspiration for his books and how he became an author. He also read extracts from his books, allowed lots of time for the children to ask him questions and even got his guitar out and demonstrated, in the most entertaining way possible, that authors don’t just have to write books! All of the children had a fantastic time learning more about how to become an author and what makes a good piece of writing, but most of all, they went away feeling inspired.

We were very lucky at the end of the day too, when Mr Dougherty held a book sale and signing event in our very own library. Lots of children and their parents were able to buy one of his many books as well as meet him personally to have their book signed.

“I really liked his comedy books because they made me laugh and I love making people laugh too.” Kyan Y2

“I liked his songs about Stinkbomb and Ketchup Face because they were really funny!” Emily Y2

“I really liked it when he told us that he gets his ideas from his children” Katie Y3

“He was really funny and he inspired me to write stories.” James Y3
